This Type of Cedar is the top of the line best
wood for longevity being a 25 year fence.
Western red cedar is known for its resistance
to moisture and decay. It is reddish brown in
color and is not prone to warping as western
red cedar doesn’t hold moisture.
Imported cedar, also known as Japanese cedar, is a 20 yr fence. It is the less costly alternative to western red cedar more commonly now used in new construction for the price point and longevity. Imported cedar is less dense than western red cedar which
causes warping and cracking in some cases. Imported cedar is the “Economic” cedar.
Treated pine is a dense wood that holds moisture and is a 10-15 year
fence. Treated pine is prone to warping and cracking therefore it is the cheapest option.
Metal frame gates are the best option for
a wood privacy fence. The gate is hung on
bulldog hinges that wrap around the metal
post to the metal frame on the gate, and
has adjustability with the tension wire in
the middle of the frame. This style of gate
opens inward.
These hinges give metal frames the option to
open out, these are more expensive as they
are more specialty hinges and take longer to
hang than the regular bulldog hinges.
Wood frame gates have the strap hinges on
the picket side of the fence and open outward.
These gates are prone to sagging as the
hinges are attached wood to wood and the
screws pull out over time and use. This is the
less costly option.
